FASS RECONCILING CURRICULUM GRANT PROGRAM

As part of our continued committment to decolonization and reconciliation, FASS offers grants to FASS continuing faculty who are developing constructive action in their curriculum to address the ongoing legacies of colonialism and the work of reconciliation in the following categories: 

  • Micro Research and Teaching Development Grants. Total: $10,000 p.a.
  • Lower Division (LD) Courses Advancing Decolonization/ Reconciliation. Total up to $25,000 annually
  • Upper Division (UD) (Graduate) Courses: individual or team grants for up to $20,000
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training and Professional Development. Total: $15,000 p.a.
  • Community-based Partner Development. Total up to $20,000 p.a.

FASS Instructional Recording Space

The FASS Deans Office and the Department of Linguistics have worked together to make a sound booth in RCB 7201 for use by all FASS instructors. The booth is a 10ft x 12ft sound-attenuated space suitable for recording lectures, interviews, podcasts, or other audio-visual productions.

The room includes an iMac and a variety of microphones and video recording solutions for use in conjunction with the sound booth, as well as two workstations (Windows and Mac) for audio/video editing with software (Final Cut Pro for Mac & Adobe products like Premiere Pro for Windows).

Online and Blended Learning Design

Definitions

  • Online (OL) = Fully asynchronous
    • e.g. Distance Education
  • Blended (B) = Combination of asynchronous online and in-person 
    • e.g. recorded lectures on Canvas and tutorials take place in-person
    • Class time: 25-75% of typical in-person contact hours replaced by asynchronous online component
    • Note: alternating arrangement possible when partnered with another instructor/course (one week online, one week in-person, and online again)
  • BLS = Combination of synchronous online and asynchronous online
    • e.g. online recorded lectures on Canvas, tutorials to take place on Zoom

Examples

Online (OL)

  • Each weekly module could consist of a series of short videos (Keynote/PPT with audio), Slido interlude (voting options mirroring an in-person classroom where instructors ask for a show of hands, short answers, etc.), summary (PDF)
  • Optional group discussions and weekly video announcements that directly respond to issues and questions raised in discussion

Blended (B)

  • A Blended course with two weekly hours of lecture and one weekly hour of tutorial could have the lectures delivered asynchronously online while the tutorials are delivered in person (67% asynchronous online, 33% in-person).
  • A Blended course with three weekly hours of lecture (no tutorials) could have one hour of lecture delivered asynchronously online and a two-hour in-person meeting divided among lecture, presentations and discussion (33% asynchronous online, 67% in-person).
  • A Blended course with four weekly hours of lecture (no tutorials) could have three hours of asynchronous online lecture, and one hour of in-person group presentations (75% asynchronous online, 25% in-person).
