Areas of interest
My lab is interested in understanding the molecular alterations that occur during bacterial infections of epithelial cells. We have 3 major areas of research; 1) alterations to the skeleton within host cells (the cytoskeleton), 2) strategies bacteria use to gain entry to their host cells and spread from one cell to another and 3) the identification of therapeutics for bacterial infections and other diseases.
We utilize a wide variety of different types of bacteria to answer our questions including: Listeria monocytogenes, pathogenic E. coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumonia, Edwardsiella tarda and the potential bioterrorism agent Francisella tularensis. Technically, we use an array of microbiological and molecular/cell biological tools as well as proteomics to test our hypotheses. We routinely use light and electron microscopy, 3D imaging, fluorescent protein imaging in live cells as well as RNA interference and CRISPR to uncover sub-cellular alterations caused by these bacteria.
WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR HIGHLY QUALIFIED UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS AS WELL AS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS. If you are interested in joining the lab please contact me by email.
