A red turban snail (Pomaulax gibberosus), one of the most common sights on a dive in coastal British Columbia, captured in a more dramatic setting. This photo was taken during a marine biodiversity survey in Barkley Sound during the summer of 2022.

Many fungi spend much of their time as a mass of microscopic threads called hyphae. In this Sclerotium species, the hyphae can form hardened balls called sclerotia, which we can see here under a dissecting microscope. Sclerotia are typically hardier than unprotected hyphae, helping the fungus survive harsh environments until conditions improve.

This image was derived from a HeLa cell line. Henrietta Lacks, and the HeLa cell line that was established from her tumor cells without her knowledge or consent in 1951, have made significant contributions to scientific progress and advances in human health. We are grateful to Henrietta Lacks, now deceased, and to her surviving family members for their contributions to biomedical research.
