On October 12, 2022, IRCC announced a  exempting certain in-Canada foreign nationals from submitting an  as part of their application when their previous IME has expired. On October 4, 2024, until October 5, 2029. 

You and your  may be exempt from completing another IME if you meet all of these conditions:

• You applied, or are applying, for either permanent residence or  (e.g study permit, work permit, visitor record, etc.) within Canada
• You already live in Canada
• You completed your previous IME in the last 5 years
• Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) found your previous medical exam to indicate a low risk or no risk to public health or public safety

If you completed an IME within 5 years of submitting your new application to IRCC, include the IME* number (or the unique medical identifier number/UMI**) from your previous medical exam in your current application.

*IME number is an 8-digit number that is assigned to a specific IME. If you have completed an IME before, you will be able to find your IME number through the IRCC online account.

**UMI number is a Unique Medical Identifier number that you will receive during an Upfront Medical Exam. You may find it on the eMedical document issued by the Panel Physician.

If you are exempt under the public policy above, when submitting your application to IRCC we recommend that you attach a brief explanation letter explaining that you are eligible for this exemption and include the IME or UMI number from your previous IME.

The extended temporary public policy will remain in effect until October 5, 2029. Applicants who are not eligible under this temporary public policy are required to as per usual health screening procedures. IRCC will contact individuals who are not eligible for the exemption to discuss next steps.
