Call for Proposals: Inter-Asia Beyond Asia Graduate Student Workshop

This event will be a day-long graduate student research and writing workshop held on Sunday, September 23, 2018 that will be open to the public. During this workshop, students and early career researchers (ECR) will receive detailed feedback from local and international faculty mentors on their research. These faculty mentors have strong expertise with Inter-Asia cultural studies, diaspora studies, postcolonial theory, and media studies. Graduate students at the M.A. and Ph.D. level will circulate drafts of their research before the workshop for faculty mentors and the other graduate students and ECR to read and comment on.

In the morning session, the students will present their research and then receive detailed individual feedback from the faculty mentor that has been assigned to them. The discussion will then be opened up to the rest of the room and other faculty mentors, graduate students, and ECR will participate in the discussion about the individual students research.

In the afternoon session, the students will participate in breakout groups and a general roundtable where they will discuss their critical approaches and methodologies. In talking about process and framings, we encourage participants to talk about how they approach their projects and how we might think about interdisciplinary research dialogues.

This graduate student and ECR workshop will draw on international faculty members from Asia and Australia. These faculty members are well-equipped to advise our graduate students as they have supervised many graduate and postdoctoral students at their own institutions, lead renowned research clusters, and edit major journals. The invited out of town scholars for this event are Dr. Olivia Khoo (Monash University), Dr. Jane Park (University of Sydney), Dr. Andy Chih-ming Wang (Academica Sinica), Dr. Fiona Lee (University of Sydney), Dr. Jia Tan (Chinese University of Hong Kong), and Dr. Robert Diaz (University of Toronto).

To be considered for this workshop, please email the following by July 15 to <asnas@sfu.ca> with Graduate Student Workshop Submission as your subject line:

o a research statement (up to 300words)
o a recent CV
o an abstract of the paper you plan to submit for selection (up to 300words)

Regrettably, only a limited number of applicants will be chosen to receive individual feedback from the guest speakers, largely depending on fit with the research expertise of our visiting guests. Those selected will need to submit their full papers by August 15. Those not chosen for individual feedback will be invited to participate in the breakout groups and general roundtable in the afternoon session.

This workshop is organized by Christine Kim and Helen Leung for the Institute for Transpacific Cultural Research (ITCR). The organizers are grateful for the support from SSHRC, 間眅埶AVs VPA, 間眅埶AVs FASS, 間眅埶AVs David Lam Centre, 間眅埶AVs Department of English, and 間眅埶AVs Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Womens Studies.
