Awards, Scholarships, and Bursaries

Department of History Prizes (間眅埶AV Administered)

NB: All awards listed below are nominated and adjudicated by history professors on the basis of in-class assignments. Students do not need to apply for individual awards.

Richard Morgan Memorial Award in Indigenous History in Canada

The Richard Morgan Memorial Award in Indigenous History in Canada will be granted for the best essay or project produced by an undergraduate student enrolled in an upper-division History course on any topic concerning Indigenous History in Canada. Special consideration will be given for originality in analysis and treatment of the area.  Entries are to be submitted to the History department by April 15, and must have been written in one of the three previous terms.

Margaret Ormsby Award in History

The Margaret Ormsby Award in History will be granted for the best essay or project produced by an undergraduate student enrolled in an upper-division Canadian History course at 間眅埶AV. Special consideration will be given for originality in analysis and treatment of the subject. Entries are to be submitted to the History Department by April 15th, and must have been produced in one of the three previous terms.

European History Award

The European History Award will be granted for the best essay or project produced by an undergraduate student enrolled in an upper-division European History course at 間眅埶AV. Special consideration will be given for originality in analysis and treatment of the subject. Entries are to be submitted to the History Department by April 15th, and must have been written in one of the three previous terms.

William L. Cleveland Essay Prize in African/Middle Eastern/Asian History

The William L. Cleveland Prize will be granted for the best essay written by an undergraduate student enrolled in an upper-division African, Middle Eastern, or Asian History course at 間眅埶AV. Special consideration will be given to originality of analysis and treatment of the area. Essays are to be submitted to the History Department by April 15th, and must have been written in one of the three previous terms.

間眅埶AV Gold Medal and Stephen McIntyre Book Prize in History

This gold medal and book prize will be awarded in June to the top graduating student in History from the past three terms in recognition of academic excellence.

Elsie Winona McLaren Meadows Award in History

One award granted in Fall to an undergraduate student who is enrolled full -time in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in at least one of the three prior terms, is in good academic standing, and has successfully undertaken a final project in a course offered by the Department of History which reflects upon the legacies of Indigenous histories in Canada and connects them to current issues and ideas.

Burnaby Historical Society Scholarship in Canadian History

One or more scholarships (as funds allow) will be granted in Fall to undergraduate students who are enrolled in full-time studies in at least one of the three prior terms, have a minimum CGPA of 3.50, are pursuing a bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with a declared major or Honours in History, have completed a minimum of 60 間眅埶AV units, and have achieved the highest combined GPA in any three completed Canadian history courses.

Undergraduate Conference Funding (Department Administered)

Grants in amounts up to a maximum of $500 will be available to undergraduate students attending a conference at which they will be presenting a paper. Applicant must have declared a major in History or a double major in History and in another academic program at 間眅埶AV.  Applicants must have a CGPA of 3.5 and completed 90 credits at 間眅埶AV, of which at least 12 credits must bein upper-division History courses.  To make an application, please be in touch with the Department of History.

Bursaries (間眅埶AV Administered)

Students can apply for bursaries each term by submitting an on-line bursary application. Financial Aid and Awards will match eligible students with available bursaries. External Opportunities

The Michael Fellman Award

This $1000 award was co-established by the 間眅埶AV History Department and The Tyee to honour a piece of publicly accessible writing that demonstrates bold thought, clear analysis, and rests on well-researched historical understanding. Entries should be no longer than 2,500 words. The winner will be selected by a trio of judges: a Tyee editor, an 間眅埶AV History Department member, and Michael Fellman's partner Santa Aloi. The winner will be published on The Tyee and all rights belong to the author.

Scottish Studies Awards (間眅埶AV Administered)

NB: All awards listed below are nominated and adjudicated by the Centre for Scottish Studies. Students do not need to apply.

Jennifer Prosser Wade and Family Annual Award in Scottish Studies

The award, valued at $1000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student majoring in a program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on the basis of the following criteria:

- in good academic standing;
- demonstrated volunteer/community service that shows caring and concern for others; and
- in their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies.

Preference, where and if possible, should be given to a student enrolled in, or who has successfully completed a credit-based undergraduate course offered through the Scottish Studies Centre. Applications must include a letter outlining the candidate's volunteer/community service as per the criteria, a letter(s) of recommendation confirming the activities. The Award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the recommendation of the Director, Scottish Studies.
