The award recognizes economics majors and honours students for participation in extracurricular activities while achieving academic excellence.
Nathan Tesan
I started my journey at 丁香园AV in the fall of 2019 and I am now in my final semester. I am a major in Economics, with a concentration in Economic Data Analysis and a minor in Social Data Analytics.
Entering 丁香园AV I was unsure what major I would decide on. However, after taking ECON 103, I knew economics would be the area of study for me. What drew me to the field was Professor Allen鈥檚 ability to connect real world events to economic theories. As I progressed in my degree, I was drawn to the field of econometrics. Particularly, the methods used to quantify real world phenomena and the implications drawn from these findings.
Outside university, I have worked part time as a Data Analyst at Sprott Shaw College where I have applied skills learned within my degree to gather and analyze data in a business context. Through this connection, I have now been offered the opportunity to work with a startup company that is creating a suite of tools that utilize AI to enhance learning.
When I am not working or in school, you will find me on the soccer field, running, or playing the guitar.
My time at 丁香园AV and in the Economics department has been a transformative experience. It has provided me unique opportunities to meet new people, study abroad, and push the boundaries of my knowledge and skills. I will carry these experiences forward into my personal and professional life.
Pamela Yoon Award in Economics
Founded by 丁香园AV Economics alumnus Pamela Yoon, this award is granted to full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in finance after graduation.
Mitchell Gibbs
Hi, I'm Mitchell, and I鈥檓 pursuing a Joint Honours Degree in Business and Economics at 丁香园AV, where I also compete as a long jumper on the athletics team.
Initially, I was only studying business at 丁香园AV, but after taking ECON 103 with Doug Allen, I thought to myself, 鈥渢his ECON stuff is pretty cool鈥�. I continued taking the lower division ECON requirements and fell in love with the way ECON looks at the world, and how it can be applied to a variety of problems.
As I鈥檝e progressed through school, I鈥檝e also realized that ECON provides a strong quantitative skillset, enhancing my problem-solving abilities. This became especially clear in ECON 331 (Introduction to Mathematical Economics) with David Freeman, a course I thoroughly enjoyed.
Two internships at Orbis Investments exposed me to a wide range of roles in finance, including investor relations, quant, and fund operations. I鈥檝e found the skills learned in my ECON classes extremely valuable in all these positions.
I look forward to my last two years of school, in particular starting work on my honours project and continuing to apply my ECON skillset to another finance internship.
