Looking back at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Economics in 2022

As we celebrate the start of the new year and a new semester, here is a recap of some of the highlights from the Department of Economics this past year.

John Rae prize - Krishna Pendakur 

Professor Krishna Pendakur won the $5,000 John Rae Prize, awarded bianually to the Canadian economist with the best research record during the last five years. 

Cormack Teaching Award - Martin Santamaria

For his excellence in teaching, economics lecturer Martin Santamaria won the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Cormack Teaching Award

SSHRC Insight Grants - David Freeman, Arthur Robson and Kevin Schnepel 

Three economics researchers had projects awarded 

SSHRC Insight Development Grants - Fernando Aragon, Minjie Deng, Dongwoo Kim, Pierre Mougaine 

Four economics researchers had projects awarded . These grants support research in its early stages. They enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches or ideas.

Since 2000, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Economics has held strong on its research productivity ranking as . The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Economics community continues to thrive, attracting robust numbers of undergraduate and graduate students to its programs. 

Three Convocations

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV hosted three in-person Convocation celebrations in 2022, with a special May Welcome Back Alumni ceremony for graduates who didn't have the opportunity to cross the stage in 2020 and 2021.

RESEARCH AT ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV ECONOMICS

Research is at the heart of everything we do. Throughout 2022, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Economics' Research Seminar Series and Brown Bag Seminar Series has continued to thrive in the form of both in-person and virtual seminar offerings. Our much anticipated annual BMO Public Lecture returned in person this year with Dr. Philip Oreopolous, thanks in part to the generous support of the David and Cecilia Ting Endowment for Education and Public Responsibility.
