PhD Comprenhensive Examination

After completing the required coursework, PhD students must take a comprehensive examination that covers two core areas: methods and theory, specifically tailored to the student’s general research interests. The purpose of this exam is to assess the student’s ability to conduct independent research once research questions have been identified. Students are typically expected to complete their coursework and the comprehensive examination within two to three years of entering the program. It is important to note that the comprehensive examination is not intended to test broad knowledge of criminology, but rather to assess the student's understanding and capability before they complete their prospectus and dissertation.

Examination Enrollment

Enrollment in CRIM 897, the PhD Comprehensive Examination, is processed by the Graduate Program Assistant and requires the completion of the PhD Comprehensive Examination Registration form. Students are allowed up to four months to complete the comprehensive examination. Therefore, enrollment in CRIM 897 should only occur during the term in which they plan to take the examination, and not earlier. Students should thoroughly review the timeline for the comprehensive examination as outlined in the PhD Comprehensive Examination Registration form – CRIM 897 Comprehensive Examination Guidelines.

Examination Committee

The comprehensive examination committee is selected by the student’s supervisor in collaboration with the student. The committee typically consists of three members from the School of Criminology faculty. At least two members must be part of the student’s program supervisory committee, while the third member is chosen from the broader faculty based on interest and relevant research expertise.

Examination Format

The examination usually focuses on a challenging assignment that is distinct from the specific topic of the doctoral thesis but often falls within the same general subject area. The length of the comprehensive examination response is determined by the committee but generally should be no less than 50 pages and no more than 75 pages.

Examination Assessment

The overall grade for the comprehensive examination is assessed by the committee and decided by majority vote. The committee may award one of three possible grades: Pass, Fail, or Revise and Resubmit. For more information about the evaluation process for the comprehensive examination, refer to the PhD Comprehensive Examination Registration form – CRIM 897 Comprehensive Examination Guidelines.
