The Nihal Singh Ras Undergraduate Bursary

The Nihal Singh Ras Endowment Fund was established at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in 2014. The endowment fund supports the Nihal Singh Ras Undergraduate Bursary. The bursary is intended to offer financial assistance to single parents in financial need.

One bursary, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • is in good academic standing;
  • is enrolled full-time at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV;
  • is a single parent; and
  • has demonstrated financial need.

First priority for the bursary will be given to a single parent who has declared a major in the Department of Biomedical Physiology & Kinesiology. If no one fits the criteria of the first priority, second priority will be for a single parent who is enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Science. If no one fits the first and second priority criteria, then preference will be given to a single parent enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in any faculty. The award is given out no more than five times (maximum) to the same deserving student.

The bursary will be administered by the office of Financial Aid and Awards and granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

About Nihal Singh Ras and Dr. Parveen Bawa

Nihal Singh Ras (1906 - 1982, Amritsar, India) was an educationalist and a writer specializing in the history and literature of Punjabi language written both in Urdu and Gurmukhi scripts.  He believed in equality of women, openly celebrated the birth of his three daughters, all of whom earned graduate degrees. His books on Punjabi literature can be obtained from the National Library, Government of India.

Dr. Parveen Bawa, daughter of Nihal Singh Ras, was born and raised in India. She was a faculty member (1978 -2009) in ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology with research interests in Neuroscience.
