Biography
Dr. Jimmy Dhesa was raised in Surrey, British Columbia. He completed his undergraduate studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in Biomedical Physiology. He went on to complete his Doctor of Optometry at Pacific University in Oregon. He fulfilled his clinical rotations at medical centers focusing on ocular disease and family eyecare. At graduation he was presented with the Outstanding College of Optometry Graduate award for outstanding leadership, involvement, community service, academic achievement, and service to the University. Dr. Dhesa has a particular interest in ocular disease management including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Dhesa enjoys spending time with his friends and family. He’s a competitive Bhangra dancer and has performed at numerous local and international competitions. Dr. Dhesa is passionate about improving accessibility to eyecare and eyewear.
QUESTIONS
1) What is your current position? What does a typical work day look like for you?
I am a co-owner of Eyestyle Eyecare a medical optometry clinic with retail eyewear in South Surrey. I also work as an associate optometrist at another optometry clinic. A typical work day consists of direct patient care focused on ocular health and achieving the best possible visual outcomes for my patients. I work directly with ophthalmologist to schedule referrals and co-manage patients. Co-management includes routine exam reports, pre-operative reports and post operative care with reports. As a business owner I also oversee day to day operations, inventory, and managing finances.
2) How did your education in BPK influence your career?
BPK helped me build a strong foundation in understanding the human body. This influenced me to pursue a career in health care and ultimately specialize in ocular health.
3) Who in BPK had an impact on you and why?
My professors, peers, and BPK staff all had an impact on my education. Positive interactions and support from members of the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV community on my undergraduate journey motivated me to work harder and purse my goals.
4) What is your favourite memory of your time at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV as an undergraduate?
Working with various clubs and students associations on supporting their initiatives and events were my favourite memories and most rewarding experiences as a student.
5) What advice would you give to today’s BPK student?
My advice to all current and incoming BPK students is to have an open mind. Pursue any opportunity that comes your way. Everyone's journey is different and don't be afraid to ask for help along the way!
