REEL 76 COMMENTARY

1. Opens inside van. Window rolls down.

0'45" distant train whistle.

General city rumble, little foreground sound. On headphones, there is quite a bit more spatial depth perceived than over speakers.

2. City rumble at start. At 0'50" microphones are moved inside car. Van heater becomes foreground. Quite a contrast.

3. Few sounds other than the gigantic booming noises of the train. Finally it moves off, tooting out of earshot.

2'40" diesel looms into foreground, nice throb, then moves away, clatter of rails.

*3'25" blows its horn, urban throb still there.

4. Diesel train with a strong foreground throb.

1'00" moves out to background.

5. Different location, birds chirping, traffic events are discrete, some work-type sounds in the background.

2'55" car passes, followed by distant train whistle.

4'35" short train toot and single echo.

5'00" - people, voices and footsteps, passing by.

6. Different location again, very busy ambience: traffic and urban roar in background, birds, hammering and a high hum (from factory?) which is very annoying because it is continuous.

0'50" distant train horn.

4'00" high hum cuts out.

4'20" start again.

7. Starts out with lots of traffic. Boys voices very lively, echoey, must be surrounded by buildings. Traffic ambience and urban roar throughout.
