REEL 77 COMMENTARY
1. Wonderful sounds, hundreds of active kids in a playground, punctuated by train whistle.
0'40" "Hey, whatya doing?" followed by conversation with recordists, punctuated by school buzzer and train whistles from nearby level crossing. Amazing sequence!
1'00" "bye ".
*3'25" train wheels screeching.
3'50" kid imitating 2-note siren.
*4'10" train whistle.
4'30" train whistle.
4'45" more questions and rude noises for the microphones.
"Whatya doing?" chorus of voices, very funny questions.
*6'45" car horn, insistent and impatient, quieter ambience now, fewer kids.
6'50" screams, distant chanting, and 2-note siren imitator.
7'00" approaching a sewer grate, trickling sound. (There is a splice in the tape here, somebody has ripped off about 6 minutes of valuable sounds. BRING IT BACK, WHO EVER IT WAS!)
2. Opens with question about tape recorder as recordists are getting their tires pumped up at a gas station. Recordist's comments, then driving off in car.
2'40" car stops, kids outside at daycare centre, nice laughing.
3. Here the recordist plays with the kids as he tapes, they cling about the microphones like flies, great exchange!
0'20" "Hi, who are you?" -- chorus -- continues, quite funny.
2'15" questions about tape recorder.
*3'00" train whistle, recordist hums along and more comments on tape recorder.
3'35" whistle again.
3'50" and again, question continues, bicycle noises.
4'40" rumble of diesel in background.
5'50" train whistle again, distant.
6'10" very close, curious voice, followed by others, some laughing.
8'00" earth mover working across the street, manages to cover up most of the kids. Kids continue to play with microphones.
9'10" airplane flies overhead.
*9'45" same whistle in distance, lull in earth mover.
10'00" more laughing, giggles.
12'15" earth mover stops motor.
