REEL 48 COMMENTARY

1. Ferry has a tok-tok motor. Cars leaving ferry (0'40"). Recordists' car starting and leaving ferry (0'40"-1'20"). Nice take. Recordists' car stopping to record ferry motor and other cars leaving (1'40"-4'30"). Motor is extremely loud, getting quieter (4'15") to a slow idle, then leaving. Recordists' car starting and driving off (5'00").

2. Lots of traffic, that masks almost completely some distant bells. Throughout take a distant train whistle blowing ever so often, that has the same pitch as distant bell. Creates strange acoustic illusions. After the distant ring there also seems to be a carillon ringing, but very faint, hardly audible with traffic noise. Bell ringing noon (4'05") close by. Helicopter overhead (6'00"). Interesting how it slowly emerges out of general ambience, then dominates and then merges with ambience again. Very good take, full of variety. (See also notes on data sheet.)

3. Bells ringing (0'35") short melodic fragment.

4. Bells audible from inside (0'45"). Loud hammering (1'25"). Traffic ambience from outside only occasionally penetrating the building, brakes squealing (2'30"), or low frequency from truck motor.

5. Ringer is a woman, and she describes process of ringing. She has a nice, fine voice. Organ motor starting off at end.

6. Recording made from acoustic perspective of organist, i.e., close to console. Clatter of keys and footpedals audible. First piece: Bach, Prelude #8. Organist (same as bell ringer) inquires about purpose of recordists' activity. Her voice and her dialect are, indeed, beautiful. Another piece (Bach, Fugue #8) (5'30"). Recordists walking out of church while organ is playing (8'00"-end). Nice door sound at end. Good last part.

7. Sounds like fast driving.

8. Nice contrast to above.

9. Main sound is from conveyor into burner, loud motor revving.

10. Interesting ambience with one steady throbbing hum, a recurring squeak, background clatter and motor sound. Fairly noisy.
