biography

Bob Wyllie joined ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV as a charter member in 1965 and was Chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department from 1978 to 1989, and again from 1991 to 1993.   He has held teaching positions at the Oxford College of Technology in England, and the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.   He was pro bono Research Adviser to the Ghana Tourist Board from 1987 to 1991, and was also instrumental in the establishment of Ghana’s Distance Education system.   His research interests include tourism, leisure and popular culture, and African traditional medicine and religion.  He has conducted sociological and ethnographic field research in Ghana, Hawaii, and Scotland.  His books include: Spiritism in Ghana: a study of new religious movementsGhana tourism: prospects and possibilitiesTourism and society: a guide to problems and issues; and An introduction to tourism.  Many of his articles have appeared in leading international scholarly journals, including AfricaAmerican AnthropologistAnnals of Tourism ResearchAnthroposBritish Journal of SociologyCurrent AnthropologyEthnosMan, and Journal of Development Studies.
