Transformative Education for Refugee Children and Youth:

Strengthening Well-being and Shaping Futures.

(A Scoping Review)

This project addresses the pressing need to enhance the well-being of refugee children and youth (RCY) by synthesizing existing research and proposing evidence-informed strategies to transform educational systems through informed policy and practice. RCY face complex challenges as they adjust to life in host countries. This population often contends with traumatic experiences rooted in forced displacement as they take refuge or resettle in unfamilier social, cultural, political, economic, and educational environments. Historically, education has been viewed as a vehicle for integration. However, systemic barriers such as language difficulties, cultural differences, limited mental health support, and socio-economic disadvantages often impede RCY's success within educational settings.

What Was Done:

  • Results of this 'scoping review' provide a comprehensive overview of current knowledge concerning the designs of educational systems that are intended to support the psychosocial well-being of RCY.
  • Effective program types, instructional methodologies, and support strategies employed across various contexts are identified.
  • Implications for policy and practice are included.
