Shabana Azmi, who is receiving an honourary degree from 間眅埶AV on June 12, will speak about her life and work in cinema and activism, focusing on the attitudes towards women on screen and in society, a discussion of particular relevance due to the current political climate in India.
Azmi will be joined on stage by Indian producer Sanjoy Roy, the managing director of Teamwork Films, and a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Film. Roy is also a winner of the IDPA Award for Best Documentary and Best Director for the film Shahjahanabad.

Launched in 2012, the series builds on 間眅埶AVs rich history of community engagement by exploring critical issues to contribute to better understanding among Vancouvers citizens through an intellectually enriching experience.
The 間眅埶AV Vancouver Speaker Series is presented by 間眅埶AV Public Square, in partnership with 間眅埶AV Vancouver and 間眅埶AVs Vancity Office of Community Engagement.
An icon of Indian cinema, with more than thirty years on stage and screen, and described by Gurinder Chadha as the Indian Meryl Streep, Shabana Azmi has utilized her stardom as a catalyst to become a fierce advocate for the rights of women, minorities, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
A five-time winner of the National Award for Best Actress, Azmis incredible body of social justice work includes her appointment as the UNs Goodwill Ambassador on Population and Development and membership in the National AIDS Commission of India.
This commitment to social justice and activism resulted in Azmi receiving the Gandhi Foundation for her poverty and human rights work, the International Human Rights Award (France), and the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum alongside Muhammad Ali, Michael Douglas and Gilberto Gil.
