Optimal frequencies for water expulsion from mammal fur
Feb 28, 2020 at 1:00pm in C9000
Synopsis
For many mammals shaking dry is a survival mechanism that may prevent hypothermia. In this talk I will discuss the relationship between a given mammals body mass and the frequency of their shake based off analysis of centrifugal and surface tension forces. We will explore the effectiveness of this mechanism through measurements of residual moisture content, and ultimately determine if water removal from fur via oscillations is more energetically favorable than evaporative drying.
