September 2024 Update
M.D. Program Approved by Ministry
We are pleased to announce that our Full Program Proposal for the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program has received approval from the B.C. Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills on September 4 under section 24(2) of the University Act.
We extend our sincere thanks to collaborators and supporters who helped us establish the program鈥攊n particular UBC Faculty of Medicine, Toronto Metropolitan University, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine鈥攚hose insights and expertise were invaluable throughout the process.
The developing M.D. program is already shaping up to be exciting, dynamic and learner-focused, with key strengths: a generalist curriculum designed to cultivate a strong foundation in primary care; a community-based, longitudinal experiential learning approach that inspires continuous, team-based care; and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems to guide students in navigating respect, relevance, reciprocity and responsibility essential to serving the health needs of B.C.鈥檚 diverse communities.
As we refine the curriculum over the next year, we are eager to bring new innovations that will shape the future of medical education.
The next step in the process is securing program approval from CACMS, as we move forward with the School鈥檚 accreditation application.
Recruitment for New Associate Deans Underway
Recruitment is well underway for the Associate Dean, Indigenous Health and Associate Dean, Research鈥攖wo pivotal roles that will play a critical part in shaping the School鈥檚 priorities in advancing Indigenous health and innovations in primary care. Additional leadership roles will be posted soon as we continue building the School鈥檚 leadership team.
New Technical Operations and Facilities Lead
We are excited to welcome Martine Janicki as our new Senior Director, Technical Operations and Facilities starting in October. In this role, Martine will oversee facilities, IT, technical operations and safety and risk services in support of the School鈥檚 strategic direction. More importantly, she will have significant involvement in the development and delivery of capital renovations projects. Martine joins us from Fraser Health, where she served as Director of Strategic Facilities and Land Development. As a professional engineer and Project Management Professional, Martine brings a wealth of experience supporting the advancement of strategic planning, design and transformation in academic and health care spaces.
