Professor, Project Information Seeking Students?
Henny Yeung, Maite Taboada & Yue Wang
Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, Media

RA, L1-French: Seeking a culturally Francophone RA for the project: Consuming text and audio fake news in a first and second language. Interest in digital media—particularly in disinformation, or “fake news”—has surged. Almost all work on this topic, however, has looked only at native speakers’ consumption of English-language media. We ask here how fake news is consumed in one’s first language (L1) vs. in a second language (L2). Objective 1 of this project asks how text and acoustic signatures of truthfulness differ in written and audio news excerpts in English, French, and Mandarin. We are currently hiring a student (undergraduate or graduate) who is a native French speaker to work on this project. Duties will include attendance at regular group meetings, internet scraping, audio and text annotation, and writing of documentation (in English). Possibility of extension in Spring 2025.
Open to: Current ¶ˇĎăÔ°AV students (undergraduate or graduate) in any field

Language Production Lab: Seeking 1 paid RA for the project: Using machine learning to discover the predictability of gender and inflection class in Hindi. Applicants must be linguistics students who are native Hindi speakers. The data work is part of a larger project on studying gender and inflection class in the morphology of Hindi using machine learning methods. The research assistant will attend lab meetings where they will learn about these topics. Initial pilot work involves approximately 50 hours of work to be completed by end of September 2024, and this pilot may lead to additional work.
