Fall 2019 Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards
Every Convocation, the Department of Linguistics recognizes a small group of graduating students for their outstanding academic achievements. This fall, we would like to honour four undergraduate students and two graduate students for their hard work, perseverance, and dedication to academic excellence.
TREVOR BLOCK
Entrepreneurial MA graduate takes his love for teaching online
Trevor Block had always been interested in logic and solving puzzles so it was only natural he was drawn to mathematics and linguistics. While completing his education at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, Trevor discovered his love for teaching and combined his interests to become his life's work—an online tutoring platform called TrevTutor.
Trevor is graduating with a MA degree in Linguistics.

REGENA SEWARD-WILSON
Regena (Gena) is graduating with a MA degree in Linguistics of a First Nations Language. She was part of the MA cohort based in Duncan, Vancouver Island.
Gena presented her MA project titled, "ni’ q’ushintul’ ’u tunu shhw’alukw’a’ | Traveling with my family: Growing and learning in the Hul’q’umi’num’ language".
BA graduate on an accelerated path to complete a Master's degree
Although he is just receiving his bachelor of arts (BA) majoring in Linguistics with a Philosophy minor this fall, Lucas Chambers already has a head start on completing his graduate degree thanks to the Accelerated Master's Degree Program.

Sometimes life doesn't turn out the way you planned, and the same can be said for Susanna's time at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. Her academic path has unfolded quite unusually since her first semester.
Susanna will be graduating with a BA majoring in Linguistics with a minor in Psychology.

KEVIN KONG
Aspiring speech-language pathologist on the right track to dream career
Although he has just completed his undergraduate degree and has yet to cross the convocation stage, Kevin is already starting the next stage of his academic journey. He was accepted into UBC's Speech-Language Pathology Master's program this fall.
Kevin is graduating with a BA majoring in Linguistics with a minor in Psychology and a Certificate in the Linguistics of Speech Science.

HOLLY WILBEE
More than just a BA: Student finds empowerment through education
Holly's fascination with linguistics started with an Audrey Hepburn movie when she was ten years old. Since then, she has been actively involved in research including most recently, a project examining the voice actors of The Simpsons.
Holly is graduating with a BA in Linguistics and a Certificate in the Linguistics of Speech Science.
