International Travel Awards
The School for International Studies provides support to declared international studies majors to undertake study, research, internship, or other volunteership opportunities abroad.
- The Simons Foundation International Travel Grant
- The International Studies Travel Award
Both awards:
- provide support to declared international studies major students to undertake study, research, internship, and/or volunteer opportunities abroad.
- are valued up to $6,000.
Terms of Reference
- Declared international studies major student at the time of application and during the term abroad.
- Awards are allocated according to demonstrated financial need and student achievement.
- Students may only hold one TSFITG or ISTA during their studies at the university (cannot hold both).
- Awards will be dispersed after proof of completion is documented.
- The recipient will submit a one-page reflection and photos on the experience within one-month of return.
- By accepting the TSFITG or ISTA, you agree that you are the photographer/author of the documentation; you have permission to take photos of the selected locations and/or individuals, and you have their permission to submit the photo to the School. As the photographer, you give unlimited and unrestricted permission to the School for International Studies to use and reproduce the image in any media for promotional materials.
- There are two application intakes each year. The deadline for submission is October 1 and March 1.
Application Requirements
- Advising transcript in PDF format (sorted by both term and subject)
- One-page document that includes:
- Description of the proposed learning opportunity.
- Explanation of how the experience would support your academic and career objectives, and foster engaged, global citizenship.
- Explanation of your financial need.
- One-page budget sheet that includes:
- Estimated cost of the proposed learning opportunity.
- Funds already available for the proposed learning opportunity.
- Shortfall cost of the proposed learning opportunity.
Workstudy
Each semester there are a limited number of part-time workstudy positions available in the School for International Studies. Workstudy positions are awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in good academic standing.
Mitacs Globalink Research Award
The provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students in Canada to conduct 12鈥�24-week research projects at universities overseas.
Edward and Emily McWhinney Foundation Scholarship
One scholarship, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be granted annually in any term, with preference in the Spring term, to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- is enrolled full-time in a Bachelor's degree program with major in International Studies; and
- is in excellent academic standing.
The scholarship will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the recommendation of the Director, School for International Studies.
Dr. Alfredo E. Hurtado Memorial Essay Award
One award, valued at a minimum of $1,500, will be granted annually to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- is enrolled in full-time courses in a bachelor's degree program;
has a declared major or minor in an International Studies Program - is in good academic standing; and
- has produced the best essay with Latin American-related content.
The award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the nomination of the Director, School for International Studies.
Best Undergraduate International Studies Essay Award
Awarded to a declared International Studies student annually (valued at $500). By faculty nomination.
David Lam Centre for International Communication
The David Lam Centre provides various research funding opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students.
