  • April 3, 2019: Ramesh Thakur, Director of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament at Australian National University, visited the School and spoke with students in our core graduate seminar. Professor Thakur was a member of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS), which articulated the doctrine of Responsibility to Protect, and he also served as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. During his visit, he addressed the topic of "Global Justice and National Interests: How R2P Reconciles the Two Agendas on Atrocity Crimes". He also fielded questions from students about R2P and a range of related topics. Members of the seminar appreciated having this chance to speak with him.
  • April 2, 2019: Paul Meyer's article Creating an Environment for Nuclear Disarmament: Striding Forward or Stepping Back? has been published in the April issue of Arms Control Today. It takes a critical look at a new US policy departure with respect to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and suggests other remedial measures that nuclear weapon states can take in advance of the crucial 2020 NPT Review Conference.   • March 27-30, 2019: IS was very well represented at the  in Toronto.  Timo Thoms participated in a poster session and chaired a panel on truth commissions; Paul Meyer was on a roundtable addressing the rise of the nuclear ban treaty and the fall of the NPT; Leslie Armijo presented a paper on the international relations of big infrastructure; and Jeff Checkel presented a draft article on IR theory and identity at a pre-conference workshop sponsored by the European Journal of International Relations.

  • March 21, 2019: After a six-year absence, Paul Meyer attended the Carnegie International Nuclear Policy Conference last week in Washington D.C. He reports that it was a disturbing event in many ways given the current US-Russian assault on the strategic arms control framework and the lack of strong protesting voices from other stakeholders.   • March 20, 2019: Congratulations to Martha Snodgrass and Gerardo Otero on 3 more years of SSHRC funding for the editorial operations of the . Total award: $100,000. Well done!

  • January 24-25, 2019: Nicole Jackson was in Calgary, Alberta participating in a workshop on The State of Strategic and Security Studies in Canada organized by the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies. While there, she ran into former IS student Tim Choi, who is completing the final year of his PhD at the Centre for Military, Security and Strategic Studies at Calgary University.
  • January 18, 2019: Tamir Moustafas recent book, , has been shortlisted for the 2019 Hart-Socio-Legal Studies Association Book Prize. The prize is awarded for the most outstanding piece of socio-legal scholarship published in the preceding year. The winner will be announced in April 2019.
