Bomin Keum

Bomin Keum is a PhD student in the School of Criminology at 間眅埶AV. She completed her B.A. Honours in Criminology at 間眅埶AV and her MPhil in Criminological Research at the University of Cambridge.

Her previous work focused on pathways into violent extremism, examining disinformation, in-group and out-group dynamics, and ideological frameworks that rationalize violence. Now, she is looking at pathways out: what facilitates disengagement, what impedes it, and the barriers individuals experience in the process.

Some of her research includes analyzing social movements at the Canadian Centre for Identity-Based Conflict, conducting a Campbell systematic review on violent extremism disengagement programs, and applying machine learning to disinformation warfare and extremism detection. Her past and current research is part of her ongoing aim to unpack the broader question: how can subcultural dynamics online both cultivate and challenge extremist narratives?

Though primarily a qualitative researcher, there is, always, so much to learn and try out through different approaches. Currently she is interested in incorporating network theory and approaches in understanding both networked and micro-level dynamics of extremism and disengagement.
