Jim and Ruth Babcock
Biography
Jim Babcock embodied fierce intellect and extraordinary compassion. He believed in people, ideas, perspectives, relationships, growth and the power of a thoughtful conversation. With an exceptional commitment to deep listening and learning, Jim embraced the values of the GLS Masters program
The GLS Masters program and travel program experiences cultivated profound learning and important relationships for both Jim and his wife, Ruth. Jim graduated from the GLS program in 2006 and their connection to the program extended far beyond the timeframe of his graduate work. Jim and Ruth forged strong connections with students, program staff and professors, and each had a profound impact on their lives. The GLS community of learning resonated deeply and provided a sense place and community for them both.
Jim had an extraordinary career with the TD Bank for more than 30 years, working and living with his family in Ottawa, London, Toronto, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Halifax, Winnipeg and Vancouver. He left his mark in each of those places by building reciprocal relationships, raising others up, opening doors and being a quiet advocate for others. His career in banking made him keenly aware of the financial barriers and challenges in academia.
As an advocate for access to education, well-informed discussion, diverse perspectives and inclusion, Jim’s values are woven into this endowment fund. It reflects his generosity and belief in the strength of raising others up through access to learning. Jim has been described by those who knew him as the kindest, wisest and most generous human. Full of compassion and integrity, he was able to see the best in the people around him, spark the bright spot in all of us and open doors for the achievements of others. He was a compass for many, providing us with direction and words for reflection. This endowment fund represents a reminder of the impact that kindness, humility, integrity, education and knowledge can have on building a strong community.
Jim shared his generosity of spirit, enormous capacity for compassion and love for learning, thinking, loving and just being with his wife, Ruth, three children, Ben, Shawna and Kim, his three grandchildren, Samaya, Luc and Calla and his daughter in law Debbie and son in law Will. Together, we are honoured to support each recipients’ journey through this program and the knowledge sharing through the lecture series.
