Apply for fellowships and awards

Graduate Liberal Studies (GLS) students are eligible to apply for graduate fellowships and for private awards administered by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV (¶¡ÏãÔ°AV). Scholarships and fellowships for graduate students are administered by the Graduate Studies office.

The GLS office regularly sends out notices about private awards, graduate fellowships and other funding opportunities. You may find more information on private awards .

Graduate fellowships

Please note that a graduate fellowship requires that the recipient be registered full-time, which means one of the following:

  • You are taking two courses at once; or
  • You are enrolled in LS 998 (Extended Essays) or LS 999 (MA Project)

Jim Babcock Scholarship in Graduate Liberal Studies 

This award is intended to recognize and provide financial support to graduate students whose research focus is within liberal studies. The ideal candidates are those who foster progressive discourse and innovative thought while creating a community of engaged citizens.

Ewan Clark Memorial Award in Graduate Liberal Studies

The Ewan Clark Memorial Award is available to students who have a demonstrated history as an artist, musician, writer, or actor.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau Award in Graduate Liberal Studies

The purpose of the Jean-Jacques Rousseau Award is to provide financial support and recognition to a graduate student working on a capstone project (e.g., extended essay, a project, or a thesis) in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program.

Julie Andreyev—Animal Lover Scholarship in Animal Ethics

The purpose of the Julie Andreyev Animal Lover Graduate Scholarship in Animal Ethics is to recognize and provide financial support to one or more graduate students in the Graduate Liberal Studies program who are pursuing research, making an impact through volunteerism, community involvement or through their work, and have a substantial demonstrated interest in the ethics of care for other-than-human animals.

Examples of territories of research may include: ethics of care, ecofeminism, ecopoetics, post-humanism, post-anthropocentric philosophy, post-anthropocentric aesthetics, relational ontologies between human and nonhuman beings, critical animal studies, panpsychism, animism, environmental philosophy, more than human kinship studies, ethics of inclusion, environmental activism, or advocacy for nonhuman life.

Wright Award

The L.R. Wright Award is a GLS bursary award available only to our students.  If sufficient funds are available, and multiple students meet the criteria for this scholarship, multiple scholarships of equal value may be granted. Michael Fellman Graduate Prize

The prize recognizes a student in a Master of Arts degree program in the Department of History or the GLS program who has written the best essay or thesis. The prize alternates each year between History and GLS until the endowment funds can support two prizes, one in each department.

How to apply

To access the online award application system (GA3) please follow these instructions:

  1. Go to: 
  2. Log on to GA3 with your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV computing ID and password 
  3. Review the My Profile tabs and complete the information (Academic History, Scholarly Contributions and Awards) 
  4. Upload a copy of your CV
  5. Upload a combined pdf. document of all of your transcripts (including a current ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV unofficial transcript)
