Crafting Healthy Snacks with Chiwis Founder, Sarah Goodman
As a nutritionist and lover of snacks, Sarah Goodman was always looking for a healthy snack that would satisfy her sweet tooth while not compromising on health. Chiwis was born out of a love of snacks and adventure.
"Kiwi chips were something that I would make at home often because they tasted like candy and they were full of nutrients. I decided to look into building a brand out of kiwi chips after hearing positive feedback for years from friends and family who would try them. While I was researching the food business and figuring out if Chiwis could be a brand I slowly moved out of my full time role in the health-tech space and went full time into food!"
Tell us a bit about Chiwis products.
Chiwis started with two products, Original Chiwis which are 100% crispy dried kiwi chips, and Tropical Chiwis, which are a mix of kiwi chips, pineapple chips, and coconut chips. We use upcycled fruit as much as possible. Upcycled fruit is fruit that may be misshapen and not look perfect but are just as tasty.
We just launched three new chip varieties that aren’t kiwi based and are super delicious. We have ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Chiwis that are light and crispy and include the rind for extra vitamin C and fiber, Pina Chiwis, which are pineapple chips that use the core of the fruit for extra fiber and less waste in the manufacturing process, and Mango Chiwis which are big and crispy and include the skin for extra fiber. They will all be available in stores soon!
What advice do you have for aspiring foodpreneurs?
Speak to founders who have built brands you love about what they’ve learned along the way. Take their advice and learn from their wins and mistakes.
When I was researching if Chiwis could be a potentially successful brand I signed up for some courses through Good to Grow about building a food brand, getting onto shelves, and many other aspects of the food industry. Those courses were instrumental in making the right decisions when starting out.
What advice do you have for ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV students who aspire to have their own business one day?
It’s so important to surround yourself with people who have been in your shoes before and be able to lean on them for support along the way. I built a team of advisors that are from different sectors of the food industry as well as other businesses to be there to listen when there are issues that arise, and to be able to celebrate with when there are wins.
What’s coming up next for you?
We’d love to expand the line further to include snacks of all kinds that follow our values of being 100% natural, super tasty, and guilt free!
