COMPUTING SCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENTS

間眅埶AV's School of Computing Science is mobilizing brilliant minds to create business and societal innovation for good.

Supervisory Committee

A supervisory committee, at either the MSc or PhD level, consists of the student's supervisor, at least one other computing science faculty member, and optionally other members (typically faculty) as appropriate. Note that a student may have two co-senior supervisors. The choice of the supervisor should be made by mutual consent of the graduate student and faculty member based on commonality of research interests. The student and supervisor should consult on the remainder of the committee members.

More information and regulations on supervisory committees can be found in Section 1.6 of the Graduate General Regulations.

Declaring & Changing Committtee

When a graduate student has been admitted, the graduate program committee will exercise general supervision and provide academic advice for the student through the chair of the graduate program committee or a faculty member designated by the chair, until a supervisor has been appointed, normally no later than the student's second term if appropriate.

Continuity of supervision is important in all graduate work. As a consequence, a change in supervisory committee, especially a change in supervisor, may be made only on the basis of strong reasons.

A request for a change in the supervisory committee may come from the student or any member of the supervisory committee. It shall be sent to the graduate program committee accompanied by the reasons, in writing, for the proposed change. If the graduate program committee concurs in the request, it shall be sent to the dean of graduate studies for final approval.

Graduate Progress Report (GPR)

All MSc and PhD students need to meet with their supervisory committee at least once a year and submit a Graduate Progress Report to the university.

Keeping your progress report up to date is important to maintain your eligibility for financial awards such as Graduate Fellowships. Please make sure to check the status of your GPR on go間眅埶AV.

  • GPRs are due annually starting with your 3rd term in the program
  • Effective Summer 2023, PDF progress reports are being retired. All progress will now be reported using online Graduate Progress Reports (GPR). Make sure all your committee members are in the system in preparation for your GPR invite.

See the detailed instructions to how to complete your Graduate Progress Report.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • A marking of unsatisfactory research progress in a progress report must be proceeded by at least one written warning from the supervisor which is communicated to the student and copied to the Graduate Program Chair.
  • Unsatisfactory research progress may be cause for a student to be asked to withdraw from the program.

Academic Progress Report (APR)

This is a report available via your go間眅埶AV Student Centre that lists the courses you have taken, and how these courses are being counted towards your program requirements.

Students can access their APRs via go間眅埶AV.

If you believe there is an error on your APR, please connect with csgrada@sfu.ca.
