The Prop Master’s Dream

Vancouver, BC ¨C The Vancouver Cantonese Opera (VCO) is thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of its recent production, "The Prop Master¡¯s Dream," which received a glowing review from Opera Canada. This recognition highlights not only the artistry of our performances but also the ¡°heart and community spirit¡± that defines our organization. 

In the review, Opera Canada applauds the VCO for its innovative ¡°fusion¡± approach to traditional opera, emphasizing the emotional depth and cultural significance embedded in the production. 

In these years, VCO aims to engage our community through the rich tapestry of Cantonese opera, bridging generations and cultures. Our performances brought together diverse audiences, showcasing the talents of our dedicated artists and the passionate work of our creative team. 

¡°We are incredibly proud of the response from both audiences and critics alike. Over 80% of the feedback we received rated our performance as good or excellent." This performance marks a significant milestone for us.¡± said Rose Cheng, the Founder and Artistic Director of Vancouver Cantonese Opera and also script-writer of The Prop Master¡¯s Dream. ¡°The review from Opera Canada reaffirms our mission to celebrate and share the beauty of Cantonese opera with the broader community.¡± 

¡°Some audience mentioned that this was their first experience watching Cantonese opera. As we wrap up this season, we look forward to continuing our journey through the unique lens of this art form and strive to reach even more people in the future.¡± 

The Prop Master¡¯s Dream is a two-hour production that explores Gwan Wah-Kwan's remarkable life journey. The story follows Wah-Kwan as he returns to Canada, confronting numerous challenges, including identity issues, and uncovering the historical and cultural legacy of the Chinese community in Vancouver through Cantonese opera, Indigenous drumming, and modern jazz music.
