China Unbound & In the Camps: Inside Beijing’s High-Tech Global Policing

Joanna Chiu’s book portrays Beijing’s use of high-tech police surveillance and aggressive human rights violations against those who challenge its power in China and around the globe. Byler’s book reveals the way global developments in automated surveillance have been utilized in the mass internment of religious minorities in Northwest China. This discussion will focus on the global implications of their two books and what these developments mean for vulnerable peoples like the Uyghurs.

Joanna Chiu is a senior journalist for the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest newspaper, and has previously served as bureau chief of the Star Vancouver. As a globally-recognized authority on China, the author of China Unbound regularly provides nuanced and deeply-informed analysis for international broadcast media including CBC, BBC World, Al Jazeera and NPR.

Darren Byler is an assistant professor of International Studies at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and the author of Terror Capitalism: Uyghur Dispossession and Masculinity in a Chinese City. His current research focuses on infrastructure development and state power in comparative contexts.
