Australian scholar shares findings on internal structure of Russian-based ransomware group at Ting Forum
The School of Criminology recently hosted the first David and Cecilia Ting Occasional Forum of the fall term, featuring Chad Whelan, a cybercrime, organized crime and security scholar from Deakin University, Australia.
During the event, Whelan shared key findings on the internal structure of Conti, a Russian-based ransomware group active from early 2020 to mid-2022, which generated the most revenue of all ransomware groups in 2021.
He walked the attendees through the process he and his colleagues followed to determine the roles and structure of Conti, covering the ethical considerations, data, and methods used in their study.
The event provided an exceptional learning opportunity for the graduate students in attendance, who engaged with Whelan during the Q&A session.

About Chad Whelan
Chad Whelan is a professor of criminology and Deputy Director of the Deakin Centre for Cyber Research and Innovation, Deakin University, Australia. He principally conducts research in cybercrime, organized crime, and security. Much of his research involves applying network perspectives to these and other problems. Recent publications have appeared in Criminology and Criminal Justice, Global Crime, International Journal of Police Science and Management, Journal of Criminology, and Social Networks.
