Inherited Content

If you would like to include content that appears on multiple pages in your site, you can configure this using the Inherited Content Mode. This feature is accessible from the Sidekick.

Pages can display inherited content that is site-wide or restricted to a set of parents. Inherited content added to the home page will cascade throughout the whole site. If you wish to display certain content on only a portion of your pages, it can be set at any parent page. All children of that parent will display the inherited content. This allows authors the flexibility of defining inhertied content on a section-by-section basis.

Adding Inherited Content

To access the Inherited Content mode:

  1. In the Sidekick, select the second tab (Page) and scroll to the bottom.
  2. Click the button labeled Edit Inherited Content. You are now in Inherited Content Mode.

Within this mode you can place content in the following areas:

  • Above or below the main content area
  • Above or below the third column*
  • Below the navigation palette
  • In the footer

Once content is placed within these areas this content will show up in the same location on all of its child pages. To edit this content, navigate to the parent page on which the content was originally placed.

*To add content above inherited content in the third column on a child page, use the Above Parent Sub section.

Examples of inherited content use:

Above main content area

Inherited Content used above the main content area to display the Office of the President's banner on every page.

Below main content area

Inherited Content used below the main content area to display the United Way page footer on every page.

Below main navigation

Inherited Content used below the main navigation to display the Emergency Contacts page link.

Above Third Column Parent Content

Content used above the inherited content in a child page. This image is located in the above-parent-sub section.

The footer

The footer includes three areas which authors can customize: Connect with us, Contact us and, optionally, above the Terms and Conditions.

Underneath Connect with us authors can add links to their social media presences. By default, 間眅埶AV's official social media links are included.

Underneath Contact Us authors can include their department-specific contact information.

Above the Terms and Conditions users are given the freedom to input things such as badges or logos.

To add content to these areas, simply drag and drop the component to the inherited content area.

Note: "Contact us" section header URL is generated automatically for each site and can't be edited by the site admin. If this URL is incorrect, please contact its-help@sfu.ca to request a redirect to be created.

Note: After you are done adding inherited content, you must navigate back to where you found "Edit Inherited Content" and select "Exit Inherited Content." You will be unable to edit regular page components when you are in Edit Inherited Content mode.

Deleting Inherited Content

This option provides the flexibility for situations where you no longer want to display inherited content. In this case you will need to reset it using the following steps:

  1. Enter the Inherited Content Mode via the Sidekick.
  2. Find the tool bar above the inherited content section you want to reset and click the Edit button. A dialogue box will appear.
  3. Check the Reset Inheritance checkbox.

Note: You can create new inherited content while this option is enabled. All child pages will only show the new inherited content.
