Nothing About Us Without Us

Project Title: Nothing About Us Without Us: Building Meaningful Research Relationships with Local First Nations Communities

Primary Applicant: Dr. Krista Stelkia

Project Description

The goal of our project is to engage with local First Nations communities (Tsleil-Waututh, Kwikwetlem, Squamish, and Musqueam) on community-based health research priorities by hosting a series of engagement sessions and convening spaces based in community settings.

The specific aims of our engagement are:

  1. To develop new and build off existing partnerships with local First Nations communities and organizations to help foster reciprocal dialogue on potential research partnerships, learn about local community priorities, and establish engagement pathways with the Centre;
  2. Create an awareness of the CCAIHG mandate, vision, research priorities, and partnership initiatives; and
  3. Create a convening space to engage with local First Nations communities to learn about community-based research priorities to help with the development for the Centre’s research priority themes.

The expected outcomes of this project are:

  • established meaningful research partnerships with local First Nations communities;
  • list of research priority areas identified by each of the local First Nations communities; and
  • co-developed the CCAIHG research priority themes.

The potential impacts of our collaborative project can optimize the CCAIHG efforts in collaborating with local First Nations communities on how to meaningfully and effectively collaborate on transformative Indigenous-led health research projects that promote the health and wellness of Indigenous peoples and communities.
