OPEN SESSION

A. Finance and Administration

  1. Fundraising Progress Reports: The Board noted year-to-date progress reports as follows:

  2. The Board approved the Terms of Reference for:

  • The City of Surrey Memorial Employee Entrance Award; 
  • The Robin Blaser Endowment Fund supporting the Contemporary Literature Graduate Research Award; 
  • The RedFM 93.1 Annual Music Scholarship;
  • The Aleta Iberg Annual Memorial Award in the Faculty of Education. 
  1. The Board approved revisions to Policy GP 16, Advertsiing, Selling or Smoking Tobacco on Campus, effective immediately.  The revisions, which respond to a non-compliance order issued to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV by WorkSafe BC, strengthen the section of the Policy that deals with reporting procedures and the role of Campus Security with respect to non-compliance.

  2. The Board approved the dissolution of the Community Advisory Committee of the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Community Trust, effective December 31, 2009.

  3. The Board approved the Institutional Accountability Plan and Report for 2009/10 to 2011/12 to be presented to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.
  4. The Board received for information a draft schedule for the 2010-2011 budget process and related community consultations.
  5. The Board approved the appointments of Drs. Gary Parker and Karel Hrazdil as Trustees of the Academic Pension Plan representing Faculty for two-year terms from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2011, and the appointment of Martin Pochurko as a Trustee of the Academic Pension Plan representing the University for an indefinite term.
  6. The Board noted the Financial Year-to-Date Position as of May 31, 2009.

B. Academic Operations

  1. The Board approved the following action recommended by Senate:
  • The Certificate in Cultural Resource Management in the Department of Archaeology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. 
  1. Other matters dealt with by Senate on June 1, and July 6, 2009 were noted.

  2. The Board received for information revisions to the Teaching Faculty Policy A 12.01.

C. Other

  1. The Board was informed that Order-in--Council Board member, Bob Elton, has been re-appointed to a second three-year term ending July 13, 2012.
  2. The Board learned that ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has been accepted as a candidate for membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
  3. The Board was informed that a final budget letter would be received from government after September 1, 2009.
  4. The Board learned that President Stevenson met briefly with the new Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development, Dr. Moira Stilwell, and that a visit to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Surrey is being arranged.
  5. The Board heard a brief report from L. Brown-Ganzert, Chair of the newly formed External Relations Committee, on matters discussed at the Committee's meetings of June 17 and July 17, 2009, including arrangements for a breakfast on September 30, 2009 at the Segal Graduate School of Business that will help build networks for the Faculty of Business Administration and the University, and recognize Dr. Nancy McKinstry's contributions as a member and past Chair of the Board of Govenors.
  6. The Board received an update from the Vice-President, Research on research-related matters.
  7. The Board received an update from the Vice-President, Academic on the Three-Year Academic Planning process, the Task Force on Teachng and Learning, enrollment information for Semester 09-2, and other matters.

A. Finance and Administration

  1. The Board received fundraising progress reports for May and June 2009.
  2. The Board approved that a contract be awarded to Stuart Olson Constructors Inc. for construction management services for the Chemistry Building Renewal project.
  3. The Board approved that a contract be awarded to Henriquez Partners Ltd. for architectural, engineering and prime consultant services for the Chemistry Buidling Renewal project.
  4. The Board received for information correspondence to government officials regarding a federal government capital funding opportunity.
  5. Other matters were discussed.

  1. The Board approved an option to secure funding for the completion of the School for the Contemporary Arts.
  2. The Board received for information the President's Activity Report for May and June 2009, and heard an update on a meeting subsequently held with government officials.
  3. Other matters were discussed.
  4. At the conclusion of the Board meeting, the Board heard a short presentation from and engaged in a discussion with Mr. Gordon Harris, President and CEO of the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Community Trust, about the UniverCity development and the work of the Trust. Board members and Vice-Presidents then accompanied Mr. Harris on a short walking tour of UniverCity.
The next Board of Governors meeting will be held at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2009, at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Surrey, Room TBA.
