To date, there has been no systematic review of the experiences and outcomes of stigmatization and discrimination among persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) or interventions to reduce this discrimination. To fill this gap in the literature, we conducted a scoping review to identify the ways in which PEH have been stigmatized and discriminated against, the results of these experiences, and interventions that have been used to reduce stigma and discrimination.

Regardless of age, transportation determines access to necessary services and supports, including food, healthcare, shelter, and social connection for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH). This study compared experiences and perceptions of transportation among PEH aged <49 years old to PEH aged 50+ years. This age-based comparison offers insight into ways to increase transportation equity and support PEH of all ages who similarly have unmet mobility needs.

This paper presents an example of a LE advisory group that co-conceptualized and executed a knowledge mobilization project on aging and homelessness within three Canadian cities (Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal).

In March, our team published “Shelter/housing options, supports and interventions for older people experiencing homelessness” as an open access article in Ageing & Society.

This project builds upon a pilot study that documented innovative shelter/housing solutions that have not undergone rigorous evaluation but hold the promise of supporting “aging in the right place” for older persons (50+) with experiences of homelessness (OPEH) in Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver.

We propose the term “homeism” as the discrimination (behaviour) towards an individual who is homeless; this form of discrimination is the result of negative stereotypes (stigmas) towards individuals who are experiencing homelessness.

Despite steady increases in homelessness in the U.S., only recently has research on transportation needs and use for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) been the focus of research endeavours. Moreover, limited research has identified how the geographic relocation of homeless community services and resources impacts the transportation needs of PEH and how this process affects access to health and social services.

The rapid growth in housing insecurity among older adults is a major public health concern. While there is evidence that stress contributes to poor health, the relationship between housing-related financial stressors and cognitive functioning is relatively unknown.

Despite the unique insights PEH are able to offer on their own situations, their voices often remain excluded from research and policy. The aim of the current study was to identify the basic needs and health and social service priorities of PEH, to incorporate these voices into policy decisions and prioritization.

This article compares and contrasts the characteristics of 3 models of housing and services for older adults, cohousing, Naturally Occurring Retirement Community Supportive Services Program, and villages, and links them to the domains of the age-friendly communities (AFCs) framework.

Limited research has identified the types of shelter/housing and supports for the growing population of older people experiencing homelessness and the extent to which existing models align with their needs.
