"If space-junk is the human debris that litters the universe, junk-space is the residue mankind leaves on the planet. The built ... product of modernization is not modern architecture but Junkspace. Junkspace is what remains after modernization has run its course or, more precisely, what coagulates while modernization is in progress, its fallout. Modernization had a rational program: to share the blessings of science, universally. Junkspace is its apotheosis, or meltdown..." Rem Koolhaas
Based on Rem Koolhaas’ conception of Junkspace, students research and choose a space which is exemplary of junkspace. Photos of this space are used to compose a panorama. The assignment is to take a series of about 20 pictures from one spot in the centre of a room or space, systematically shooting a complete 360º set of images. Take a picture; before moving, notice what’s at the edge of the frame in the direction you plan to rotate. Turn until what you noticed is now at the opposite side of the frame; take the next picture, and so on. Do several rehearsals first, making sure you get the maximum coverage; the pictures should overlap slightly. Do not use panorama functions with cellphones! The images will be printed out in class and assembled into a panorama.
