General Science Bachelor of Science Double Minor Program

Faculty of Science
¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Calendar 2012 Summer

This bachelor of science (BSc) degree program provides broad education in several fields, with specialization in at least two. It requires lower and upper division units, and two minors.

Program Requirements

Students complete 120 units, as specified below.

Minor Requirements

This program requires two minors chosen from the list below, one of which must be in the Faculty of Science. Only one minor may be selected from each of the following six subject cobinations.

  • biological sciences#, biomedical physiology#, environmental toxicology#, kinesiology#, molecular bioogy and biochemistry#
  • molecular biology and biochemistry#, chemistry#, environmental chemistry#, environmental toxicology#
  • mathematics#, statistics#, computing science**
  • physics#, nuclear science#
  • earth science#, physical geography†
  • archaeology‡, psychology‡

**Faculty of Applied Sciences school
‡Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences departments
†Faculty of Environment departments and program
#Faculty of Science departments

Students must have their selection of minors approved by the program advisor as early in their program as possible.

Because of the proximity of subject matter, the following combination of minors is not acceptable.

  • chemistry, nuclear science

Lower Division Requirements

Students complete all of

  • BISC 101-4 General Biology
  • BISC 102-4 General Biology
  • CHEM 121-4 General Chemistry and Laboratory I
  • CHEM 122-2 General Chemistry II
  • CHEM 126-2 General Chemistry Laboratory II

and either all of

  • PHYS 101-3 Physics for the Life Sciences I
  • PHYS 102-3 Physics for the Life Sciences II
  • PHYS 130-2 Physics for the Life Sciences Laboratory

or all of

  • PHYS 120-3 Mechanics and Modern Physics
  • PHYS 121-3 Optics, Electricity and Magnetism
  • PHYS 131-2 General Physics Laboratory I

or all of

  • PHYS 140-4 Studio Physics – Mechanics and Modern Physics
  • PHYS 141-4 Studio Physics – Optics, Electricity and Magnetism

and either both of

  • MATH 154-3 Calculus I for the Biological Sciences
  • MATH 155-3 Calculus II for the Biological Sciences

or both of

  • MATH 151-3 Calculus I (or MATH 150)
  • MATH 152-3 Calculus II

and one of

  • EASC 101-3 Physical Geology
  • GEOG 111-3 Earth Systems

and one lower or upper division STAT course.

Upper Division Requirements

Students complete 44 upper division units (excluding EDUC 401-406).

Consult departmental advisors about selection of upper division courses in subject minors. Students should include science-related courses such as the following.

  • HIST 360-4 History of Science: Greeks to Newton
  • HIST 361-4 The History of Science: The Eighteenth Century to the Present
  • PHIL 341-3 Philosophy of Science

A 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in upper division courses is required for each of the two subject area minors, with a minimum C- grade in all courses used for the subject area minors.

Statistics Requirement

In addition to the above, students are also required to complete one lower or upper division statistics course.

Faculty of Science Requirements

In addition to the above requirements, students must also satisfy Faculty of Science major program requirements to complete a total of 120 units including

  • additional upper division units to total a minimum of 44 upper division units (excluding EDUC 401, 406)
  • students who were enrolled at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV between fall 1991 and summer 2006 are required to complete a minimum of 12 units in subjects outside the Faculty of Science (excluding EDUC 401 to 406) including six units minimum to be completed in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

WQB Graduation Requirements
A grade of C- or better is required to earn W, Q or B credit.
Requirement

Units

Notes
W - Writing

6

Must include at least one upper division course, taken at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV within the student’s major subject
Q - Quantitative

6

Q courses may be lower or upper division
B - Breadth

18

Designated Breadth Must be outside the student’s major subject, and may be lower or upper division
6 units Social Sciences: B-Soc
6 units Humanities: B-Hum
6 units Sciences: B-Sci

6

Additional Breadth

6 units outside the student’s major subject (may or may not be B-designated courses, and will likely help fulfil individual degree program requirements)
Additional breadth units must be from outside the student's major and may be B-designated (B-Hum, B-Soc, B-Sci courses). Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honors, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University’s residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.

Elective Courses

In addition to the courses listed above, students should consult an academic advisor to plan the remaining required elective courses.
