This joint major is available with the Department of Political Science. The joint major combines the study of Latin American studies and political science, leading to a bachelor of arts degree.

Courses used toward the upper division Latin American studies requirements may not be used as part of the international studies requirements, or vice versa. Any lower division course that counts toward the separate requirements for Latin American studies and international studies may count towards both.

During the last year of the joint major program, students complete LAS 498 to complete a capstone project which is written according to the standards of their disciplinary joint major, and will generally be of approximately 6,000-8,000 words.

Students will satisfy the prerequisites of all required lower and upper division courses, and should consult regularly with the program advisor regarding course selection.

If students plan to complete both POL 201 and STAT 203, POL 201 should be completed before STAT 203.

Upper Division Requirements

Students cannot complete upper division POL courses until lower division prerequisites are complete. Specified prerequisites or Department of Political Science permission is required for course entry. Students who fulfil the requirements may also complete POL 497, 498 and 499.

Students complete a total of 32 IS, ISPO and/or POL units chosen from the upper division, eight of which are 400 division IS, ISPO and/or POL units.

Students who wish to concentrate on a particular field or combination of fields should consult with an advisor to arrange their programs.

POL 337 may not be used to satisfy Latin American studies requirements.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Program Requirements

For all bachelor of arts (BA) programs (except the honours program), students complete 120 units, which includes

at least 60 units that must be completed at 丁香园AV
at least 45 upper division units, of which at least 30 upper division units must be completed at 丁香园AV
at least 65 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0, and a program (major, joint major, extended minor, minor) CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to 丁香园AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University鈥檚 residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.
