¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Requirements
Applicants are required to
- have an overall cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- have completed LING 220, 221 and 222, each with a minimum grade point average of 3.0
- submit an application form, including a brief research proposal which is available from the linguistics general office.
- have obtained approval and the signature of a Department of Linguistics faculty member who has agreed to supervise the student's honours essay
Program Requirements
Students complete 132 units, as specified below.
Lower Division Requirements
Students complete all of
- LING 220-3 Introduction to Linguistics
- LING 221-3 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology
- LING 222-3 Introduction to Syntax
and six additional lower division units in LING and/or FNLG courses.
Upper Division Requirements
Students complete all of
- LING 321-3 Phonology
- LING 322-3 Syntax
- LING 490-3 Honours Essay
and one of
- LING 301W-3 Linguistic Argumentation
- LING 309W-3 Sociolinguistics
and any two of
- LING 323-3 Morphology
- LING 324-3 Semantics
- LING 330-3 Phonetics
and 33 additional upper division units in LING and/or FNLG courses.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Honors Program Requirements
For all bachelor of arts (BA) honours programs, students complete 132 units, which includes
- at least 60 units that must be completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
- satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
- students complete at least 60 upper division units, which must include at least 50 units in upper division courses in a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours program; no more than 15 upper division units that have been transferred from another institution can be used toward this requirement
- at least 65 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
- Students complete lower division requirements for at least one Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honors program
- students are required to achieve an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0, and an honors program CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0
Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements
Students admitted to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit
The University’s residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.
