¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Calendar 2012 Spring

This inter-departmental program explores various relationships between English literature and gender, sexuality and women’s studies. Interested students must plan their program in consultation with both department advisors, and should consult Guidelines for Course Selection which is available from each department.

Program Requirements

Students complete 120 units, as specified below.

Lower Division English Requirements

Students complete a total of 30 units, including two of

• ENGL 101W Introduction to Fiction ^* (3)

• ENGL 103W Introduction to Drama ^* (3)
• ENGL 104W Introduction to Prose Genres ^* (3)
• ENGL 105W Introduction to Issues in Literature and Culture ^* (3)
• ENGL 199W Introduction to University Writing ^* (3)

*any one, but not more than one of these courses may be replaced by any three unspecified transfer units in English or in ENGL-Writing

and one of

• ENGL 201 Medieval Literature (3)
• ENGL 203 Early Modern Literature (3)

and one of

• ENGL 205 Restoration and Eighteenth Century Literature (3)
• ENGL 206 Nineteenth Century Literatures in English (3)

and any two of

Students with 18 lower division English transfer units have met the lower division requirements for a major provided those units include any one of ENGL 101W, 102W, 103W, 104W, 105W, or 199W; one of ENGL 201 or 203; one of ENGL 205 or 206; and six additional 200 division units in English. Students wishing to major in English are strongly advised to submit a formal declaration to this effect to the undergraduate advisor upon completing all lower division requirements.

Lower Division Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies Requirements

Students complete a total of 15 units, including two of

• GSWS 100 Sex Talk: Introduction to Contemporary Issues in Sexuality Studies (3)
• GSWS 101 Gender Talk (3)
• GSWS 102 Feminist Action (3)

Plus additional lower division gender, sexuality and women's studies units, for a total of 15 units.

Upper Division English Requirements

Students complete a total of 20 units, including one of

• ENGL 300 Old English (4)
• ENGL 304 Studies in Medieval Literature (4)
• ENGL 306 Chaucer (4)
• ENGL 310 Studies in Early Modern Literature Excluding Shakespeare (4)
• ENGL 311 Early Shakespeare (4)
• ENGL 313 Late Shakespeare (4)
• ENGL 320 Studies in Eighteenth Century Literature (1660-1800) (4)
• ENGL 322 Studies in the Eighteenth Century British Novel (4)

and one of

• ENGL 354 Studies in Canadian Literature before 1920 (4)
• ENGL 357 Studies in Canadian Literature since 1920 (4)
• ENGL 359 Studies in the Literature of British Columbia (4)

Plus 12 units of upper division English, 4 of which must be at the 400 level, excluding directed studies courses (ENGL 441, 442, 443 and 444).

Upper Division Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies Requirements

Students complete a total of 20 units, including

GSWS 306 Women's Autobiographies, Memoirs, Journals (4)

The remaining units are chosen from 300 and 400 division GSWS courses, at the student's discretion.

Exceptionally and only with department permission, a maximum of one course of designated women's studies credit offered by another department may substitute for one GSWS course.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Program Requirements

For all bachelor of arts (BA) programs (except the honours program), students complete 120 units, which includes

• at least 60 units that must be completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
• at least 45 upper division units, of which at least 30 upper division units must be completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
• at least 65 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
• satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
• an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0, and a program (major, joint major, extended minor, minor) CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University’s residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.
