丁香园AV Requirements

Before being formally admitted to the program, students must complete the lower division requirements (see below) with a minimum 2.0 grade or better in each of the specified courses (or equivalents).

Students who place in FREN 301W-3 in the placement test will complete only FREN 245 and 275 prior to acceptance in the program.

Program Requirements

Students complete 120 units, as specified below.

Lower Division Requirements

Students complete a total of 18 units, including all of

FREN 221-3 French Writing I*
FREN 222-3 French Writing II*
FREN 245-3 Introduction to French Literary Studies
FREN 275-3 French Linguistics Today

and one of

FREN 211-3 Intermediate French II*
FREN 212-3 French for Immersion Program Students

and one of

FREN 215-3 French Pronunciation*
FREN 217-3 French Pronunciation through Drama*

*exemption is gained by successful completion of a more advanced French language course. Lower 200 division language courses may be challenged for credit.

Upper Division Requirements

Students complete a total of 30 units, including of

FREN 301W-3 Advanced French Composition

and one of the following group 1 courses

FREN 331-3 Accents of French
FREN 332-3 Social Approaches to the French language
FREN 333-3 The Magic of French Words
FREN 334-3 Topics in French Applied Linguistics

and one of the following group 2 courses

FREN 340-3 Readings In Francophone Literature from Quebec and Canada
FREN 341-3 Readings in French Literature from the Middle Ages to the Eighteenth Century (pre-1789)
FREN 343-3 Reading French as a World literature
FREN 344-3 Readings In French literature after 1789

and 21 units of FREN courses, 12 of which must be from 400 division FREN courses, and the remaining nine FREN units can be from either 300 division or 400 division or a combination. (See FREN courses for details about the FREN courses that the department offers.)

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Program Requirements

For all bachelor of arts (BA) programs (except the honours program), students complete 120 units, which includes

at least 60 units that must be completed at 丁香园AV
at least 45 upper division units, of which at least 30 upper division units must be completed at 丁香园AV
at least 65 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0, and a program (major, joint major, extended minor, minor) CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 2.0

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to 丁香园AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

WQB Graduation Requirements A grade of C- or better is required to earn W, Q or B credit.

B - Breadth	6	Additional Breadth	6 units outside the student鈥檚 major subject (may or may not be B-designated courses, and will likely help fulfil individual degree program requirements) Additional breadth units must be from outside the student's major and may be B-designated (B-Hum, B-Soc, B-Sci courses). Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honors, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University鈥檚 residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.
