¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and Grade Requirements

A cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in SA courses is required for admission to, and graduation from, the honours program.

Program Requirements

Students complete 132 units, of which 52 must be in upper division courses

Lower Division Requirements

Students should complete all lower division requirements before completing upper division courses. Students complete the specified lower division requirements for the major program as follows.

Students complete a total of 23 units, including all of

  • SA 100W Perspectives on Canadian Society (SA) (4)
  • SA 101 Introduction to Anthropology (A) (4)
  • SA 150 Introduction to Sociology (S) (4)
  • SA 250 Introduction to Sociological Theory (S) (4)
  • SA 255 Introduction to Social Research (SA) * (4)
  • STAT 203 Introduction to Statistics for the Social Sciences * (3)

*students with an equivalent post-secondary statistics course are exempt from STAT 203. It is, however, highly recommended that students complete SA 255 before completing STAT 203.

Upper Divison Requirements

Students complete 52 units in SA courses, 32 units of which must be in anthropology. The remaining 20 units can be completed with any upper division SA course irrespective of discipline.

Course Work Option

Students who choose this option will complete 12 of the required 52 upper division SA units at the 400 division (or above), including

  • SA 450 Advanced Sociological Theory (S) (4)

Honours Essay Option

Students who choose this option will complete four of the required 52 upper division SA units at the 400 division (or above), and

  • SA 499 Independent Project Option (SA) (4)

Students must have completed all required courses, all SA units, and received prior agreement from an SA department faculty member who has agreed to supervise the honours essay, before they can enrol in SA 499. Students must also submit a proposal, a work plan, and receive confirmation of the SA faculty supervisor by the department's academic and administrative manager, by the end of the second week of classes in order to be formally registered in SA 499.

Theory requirements should be completed as early as possible in the upper division. Students are strongly urged to balance theory courses with methods courses beyond the minimum.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours Program Requirements

For all bachelor of arts (BA) honours programs, students complete 132 units, which includes

  • at least 60 units that must be completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
  • satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
  • students complete at least 60 upper division units, which must include at least 50 units in upper division courses in a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours program; no more than 15 upper division units that have been transferred from another institution can be used toward this requirement
  • at least 65 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
  • Students complete lower division requirements for at least one Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours program
  • students are required to achieve an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0, and an honours program CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0

Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements

Students admitted to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Additional Breadth

6 units outside the student’s major subject (may or may not be B-designated courses, and will likely help fulfil individual degree program requirements)
Additional breadth units must be from outside the student's major and may be B-designated (B-Hum, B-Soc, B-Sci courses). Students choosing to complete a joint major, joint honours, double major, two extended minors, an extended minor and a minor, or two minors may satisfy the breadth requirements (designated or not designated) with courses completed in either one or both program areas.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit

The University’s residency requirement stipulates that, in most cases, total transfer and course challenge credit may not exceed 60 units, and may not include more than 15 units as upper division work.
