REEL 45 COMMENTARY

1. Recordist walking along dirt road, with high tension wires; wet, squishy footsteps, occasional wind on microphones. Can't hear the wires!

2'20" stop, listen for buzz, but only distant traffic audible, start walking again.

*2. Different location from take 1, high tension hiss is faintly audible here. Loud traffic sounds in background.

3. Talking about the recording.

4. Loading freight by truck. Very noisy truck sounds throughout.

5. CP ferry departure, recorded from shore.

0'25" "Ready to go!"

0'45" winches being lifted, nice hum.

After that just general harbour ambience.

6. Railway yards, assembly wharf, mill. Idling diesel motors predominating. Gives the recording a nice acoustic perspective, a rhythm, pulse.

7. Racket outside motel window, recorded from window. Sawmill noises, prominent chainsaw nearby, mill ambience only audible when saw stops.

2'05" chainsaw operator plays with motor, imitating beat of song: A noise comedy for the poor motel guests!

8. motel room ambience recorded from bedside, window open a few inches. Mainly traffic noise from nearby highway, still fairly loud.

3'30" quiet lull.

4'45" repeated railway bell.

*5'05" train whistle.

6'30" car horn.
