REEL 44 COMMENTARY
1. Custom horn on jeep outside the Ideal Cafe (see reel 43). Recording three toots of this air horn mounted on the hood of the jeep. Recordists' reaction to the sound is hilarious! Lots of rumble at beginning of take.
2. Bad wind as recordists enter. Lots of kids' voices, game quickly over.
3. Note the great silence between events.
*0'05" pinsetter operation recorded close-up, ball rolling toward tape recorder. Good and clear recording. No other playing activity.
4. This is the Max Furguson show, take includes a lot of rumble from the car.
2'00" static.
3'00" car horn.
Interesting juxtapositions of radio music and environmental sound.
5. Radio voice in background.
6. Warning is about the rapids and was put up by B.C. Hydro.
7. Sounds very much like white noise.
1'20", 1'40" drop-outs.
10. Asking young boy who is out of breath. He is making a well intended but confusing attempt to guide recordists back to main highway. Funny. Windshield wipers going throughout.
11. Bad wind and confusion ("locked the key in") at beginning. Walking inside and asking to record oyster shucking, without success.
12. Starts outside, with fast traffic passing, walking inside, penetrating hum. About seven people shucking in reverberant concrete space, rich in high frequencies; low fan noise (hum). Very rich texture of sound, subtle work rhythms.
*3'45" recordist moves slightly closer to one shucker, very busy sounding.
7'45" recordist shouts "ok", walks outside.
13. Close up oyster shells tumbling off conveyor belt line outside.
