COMMENTARY
1-3. This is the original bullhorn which was replaced by the present buffalo horn in 1886. Its age is uncertain, but probably goes back several hundred years, and so is the oldest sound in our present collection. Last take contains the clean take (no cars).
4. This is the African Buffalo horn, presently in use at Bainbridge (see also reel 58,takes 7-10). Jack Metcalfe blows horn 3 times, then some guests try.
5. Arranging time for recording the dawn chorus. Totally comical take, with sheep bleating like mad. Sometimes they are so loud that conversation is hard to understand. Lots of disturbances when recordists walk away from sheep. Toward end of take inside chicken house, sheep still audible.
6-11. Two attempts to record the old horn as far from traffic and other 20th century sounds as possible. The first (D) is by a dirt road off the main highway, a very quiet ambience; note the short, but warm reverb here. The second (E) is by an old mill - the sound of rushing water is heard from nearby waterfall. This take begins with church bell ringing time.
