REEL 87 COMMENTARY

1. See also commentary on previous reel. Quiet ambience with foreground rustle from feeding elk (could be anything, though!). No traffic sound at all in this take.

2. A family of sheep feeding by the highway, gusting wind in back ground. At 3'50" first clearly audible sounds: hooves on hardened ground. More movement at 6'40" and 8'45"-9'45", again at 11'30". Jet overhead (9'50"). At 13'15" sheep "coughs". This was a group of several females, one or two young males and the "boss", an older ram. The ram spent most of his time policing the young males who were inclined to take off where they weren't supposed to go. The females browsed, eating while the roundup continued. Again, this take is uninteresting in terms of the animals. Recordists were watching, not listening.

3. A small brook running down the mountainside to Lake Columbia. Nice gurgly sound in higher frequency range.

4. What a contrast to previous take! Heavy low frequencies with rumbles that sound very threatening. Windshield wiper throughout.

5. Arriving, stopping car. Whistle blowing for coffee break (3'15"), a short toot. It's said to be an old tug whistle. Before and after toot mill ambience.

6. This is a loud pump, masking conversation between recordists and gas station attendant. Camper turns on ignition -- a huge sound and pump goes off (3'10"). Smaller car turns on ignition, after that, note the silence. "Ding" of cash (4'30", 5'05"), getting change (5'40").

7. Recorded from edge of forest in adjacent field. Strong wind in trees. A very relaxing sound. Cars passing occasionally at high speed, further away.
