REEL 44 C0MMENTARY
1,2. Start and stop, very loud.3. Sound concentrates on narrow frequency band. Hard to take, although comparatively quieter than the above. Added is a regular beat. Speeds up (2'05"), off (3'15"). Then short talk about engine, with 60 cycle hum in back.
5. Interesting rhythm created by pumps.
6. Very high frequencies.
7. Pumps oil into boiler, goes in counterpoint with waterpump in background. Interesting, but loud.
8. Short blast at first, then (0'20") a long one with conical transitional sounds until it reaches its steady state. Changing of levels throughout.
9/10. Blasts are very long (20"-30").
11. Three short blasts and a very long one, beautiful long echo after.
12. Great!
13. Uninteresting, useless.
14. One blast only.
15. Ambience very quiet. Horn blasts once approximately every 30". Very powerful horn.
16. Bell accompanied by strange creaking and cracking sound at beginning. Bell sounds a bit dead, and foghorn is closer and louder.
17. Bell recorded from closer up. Has this rhythm:
Lowering of levels (1'00"). Sounds more like a blacksmith's hammer than a bell. (See also data sheet for details on foghorns.)
18. Conversation about foghorn, and an emergency foghorn that hardly works. Telephone rings (4'30") and guy talking on phone. Throughout whole take powerhouse ambience that consists mainly of a 60 cycle hum. Talk about steam engine (5'35").
