REEL 22 COMMENTARY

1. Note the quiet, reverberant ambience. Stoking of stove, putting in coal, fire, all very clear. Followed by conversation about stove, church and organ (3'30").

2. He plays two short introductory pieces.

3. Walk up stairs after closing door with squeak (1'00"). Note the heavy wooden, muffled ambience as they walk up. Ringing of bell (2'45"). Going up to clock (3'30"), explanation of mechanism. The higher they walk the more they huff and puff. Arriving at bell (4'30"), history of bell (5'00"). From top of tower, ambience from village audible. Walk back down (9'20"). Note changes of ambience as they walk downstairs. Another ring of bell (11'05"). Light switches and closing of door. Closing of church door (12'45"). Unfortunately lots of wind on microphone as they go outside, so that acoustically transition is no good.

4. Ferry idling and some kids.

5. Ferry whistle blowing (0'10") and kids imitating it. Ferry then leaves dock (0'45"), it has a tockety-tock motor with heavy low frequency rumble that masks most of the voice sounds. Another toot (2'40").

6. Starts inside car., with distant low frequency rumble and short horn blast. Squeaky window rolled down (0'50") to pay fare, then rolled up again. Cars starting and car doors banging (1'20"), an accumulation of low rumbles from the idling. Chains rattling, metal clanking as ferry arrives. More cars starting (3'40"), crescendo of the general rumble. Driving from ferry onto gravel road (4'45"). Good sequence.

7,8. Wind on microphone, especially at beginning. Otherwise nice rippling of waves. Must be a fairly steep sandy beach, as waves turn over quickly, sometimes creating an almost regular beat. 30" of empty tape at end.
