REEL 21 COMMENTARY

1. Seagulls calling in foreground, general rumble as background, intensity of rumble changes throughout as distant traffic decreases and increases. Cars passing on gravel. The occasional car horn (4'45", 5'10", 10'40", 11'30", 14'00", 15'15", 15'50", 16'40"). Truck horn (6'20"). Boat attempting to start, but failing (13'30", 15'00", 17'00"), finally makes it (17'40"). It has a nice pop-pop motor, that operates highly irregularly, sounds as if it will stop any minute, in fact it stops (19'30"), starts again (19'40"), stops (21'40"). The only acoustic indication that this was taped at waterfront is the presence of seagulls. Very urban soundscape, no water sounds. Thus the boat comes as a surprise, doesn't fit. Note also that seagulls disappear when boat starts.

2. Wilson Manuel rowing to wharf. Talk starts (3'30"). Topics are: his boat; old boats (5'00"); boat whistles (8'00"); new foghorn (8'30"); first cars (9'00"); bells of Anglican church (11'25"). Sometimes hard to understand because he turns away from microphone. Another person joins them (13'00")

3. Talk about whistles and bells in Twillingate.

4. Note quiet ambience, but just before bell starts several cars pass on gravel road. Bells ringing (1'35"-5'15") accompanied by continuous squeak from mechanism. Note also the regularity of the ring.

5. Another, extremely short ring.
