Xwe'etay Origin Story
Recorded by Franz Boas in the late 1880s
From: Indian Myths & Legends from the North Pacific Coast of America: A Translation of Franz Boas' 1895 Edition of Indianische Sagen von der Nord-Pacifischen Kuste Amerikas
Boas incorrectly states that this story refers to Galliano Island (note the title), which was later clarified by anthropologists Randy Bouchard and Dorothy Kennedy (see the footnotes). It's also likely that the 'rats' that Boas is referring to here are actually beavers.
